6 Sustainable Materials: Insights from BKKDW2026
At Smile Exhibit, we live and breathe exhibitions. For us, Materials are the top priority. They are more than just surfaces or structures; they are the "heart" that communicates a brand’s values and its environmental impact.
Bangkok Design Week 2026 (BKKDW2026), under the theme "DESIGN S/O/S," serves as a wake-up call to seriously embrace sustainability through materials. Here are 6 design highlights we’ve curated that are not only "Wow" but can also be realistically applied to the next generation of exhibition design.
1. Floorament x co-incidence.process.coffee: Art from Vinyl Scraps
Concept: Turning "imperfection" into "new functions." Designers take vinyl scraps—waste usually discarded after installation—and rearrange them using geometric techniques. This creates unique, highly flexible flooring or decorative materials.
Location: Charoen Krung - Talat Noi (co-incidence.process.coffee)
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 09:00 - 18:00
2. LAUF MATERIALS by Yip In Tsoi: Solutions for Health and Planet
Concept: International standard materials with a focus on Life Cycle. This project highlights interior decorative materials that meet Green Building standards. They prioritize eco-friendly production and Low VOCs (volatile organic compounds) to ensure a safe and sustainable space for users.
Location: Yip In Tsoi Building, Charoen Krung
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 10:00 - 19:00
3. TTCC Project 「Table Matter」: Materials that Contain Memories
Concept: Merging industrial materials with craftsmanship. By using wood and aluminum to create vessels, this project blurs the line between utility and art. These materials were chosen for their durability and Recyclability, proving that beauty must also hold symbolic and lasting value.
Location: Phra Nakhon (Baan Chao Phraya or nearby)
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 11:00 - 20:00
4. Designing with Dust by Friends Making Work: The Aesthetic of Construction Dust
Concept: Revaluing construction waste. This project combines bioplastics with local dust and debris to create "Waste Terrazzo." It is 100% handmade, proving that what was once considered "trash" on a construction site can be transformed into luxury design material.
Location: Outdoor Plaza, Phra Nakhon
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 10:00 - 21:00
5. MORE RE MADE: A New Life Cycle for Event Materials
Concept: After-Event Material salvation. This initiative takes the most common event waste—vinyl sheets and corrugated plastic (Futureboard) from the previous year—and upcycles them into furniture. This concept is highly relevant to Smile Exhibit, as it drastically reduces the massive waste generated by exhibitions.
Location: TCDC Bangkok
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 10:30 - 20:00
6. Extreme Repair Lab by CU INDA: Radical Innovation in Repair
Concept: Tech-Driven Repair. Students utilize 3D Scanning and 3D Printing to repair damaged objects, giving them a futuristic new design. It challenges the idea of constant replacement, suggesting that "innovative repair" is the real solution for the future.
Location: Warin Lab Contemporary, Charoen Krung
Hours: Jan 29 – Feb 8, 2026 | 10:30 - 19:30
